British tourist figures up - and they buy houses.



According to figures released by Tourism Ministry and the National Tourism Observatory, tourist arrivals up to November 2006 have recorded a 9% increase in comparison to the same period of last year. British tourist numbers rose a staggering 36%.

The number of British tourists coming to Morocco is extraordinary and is reflected in the numbers purchasing property. Most experts expect the trend to continue for at least two or three more years and so the property market should flourish.


Tourists visiting Morocco totalled 5.87Mn during the first eleven months of 2006 while guest nights in tourist ranked institutions gained 7% by the end of November 2006 to stand at 15.2Mn nights, against 14.2Mn in the same period of 2005.

Guest nights in some destinations such as Essaouira, central west (+25%), Meknès, center (+14%), Casablanca (+11%), Agadir, south (+11%), Casablanca (+11%), Rabat (+8), Marrakech (+6%) and Ouarzazarte (+3%) scored an appreciable growth.

The room occupancy rate has moved upward by 3 points, reaching 50% and the travel receipts and expenses balance gained a 26% increase to reach 5.6Bn in comparison to the same period in 2005.

French citizens topped the list of tourists with 2.35Mn visitors (+6%) followed by Spaniards (+12%), Belgians (+9%), British (+36%), Italians (+6%), Dutch (+6%) and Germans (+7%).
